ASLA Annual Meeting is a Wrap!

Today was the last day of the 2015 ASLA Annual Meeting held here in Chicago. We had a fantastic turnout and learned a lot about the profession and the products we spec.

The Legacy Project saw some amazing donations from vendors of the EXPO. We were able to transport over 4 truckloads (including 2 flat bed trailers) of plant materials, site furnishings, pavers, planters, containers, and more thanks to a gracious donation from Clarence Davids & Company who donated their vehicles and crew. Thanks to all the vendors that donated materials at the EXPO, and to those that committed to delivering products to the Legacy Project as we get closer to the official install date at Curie High School.

Legacy Meeting #7 – Plan Review & Prepping for the Annual Meeting

After meeting with the Curie and CPS representatives, the Legacy Project Committee met to review the concept plan one last time and to talk about all the materials that need to prepared for the Annual Meeting. We discussed the status of the video that will play at the Annual Meeting, what boards and materials we’ll want at the exhibit hall/expo, how we’ll manage donations and where they’ll be stored, and what the next steps are in terms of reaching out to vendors, contractors, and volunteers.

There’s plenty to do, if you’re looking to get involved with the Legacy Committee it’s not too late. We still have plenty of work to do between now and when the installation starts in late spring early summer of 2016!

Legacy Meeting #5 - Crafting a Preferred Plan

A subgroup of Legacy Project volunteers met to go over all the student-created concept plans developed up to this point (8 in total). These plans served as the foundation for what will make up the Preferred Concept Plan for the Curie Courtyard Project.

The meeting included reviewing the initial design programs for the space, pouring over the students ideas and drawings, and discussing what's feasible and realistic based on the materials and manpower provided from ILASLA volunteers, Curie students, ACE Mentorship students, and donations from the ASLA exhibitors. The next few steps will include refining the Preferred Concept Plan and submitting to Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and Curie administrators for review and comments.

As a follow-up to Charrette #2 Legacy Project volunteers met to review the concept plans developed by the Curie and ACE students. The committee decided to break off into a subgroup that would review all the previously developed programs and plans (8 up to this point) and begin to develop the Preferred Concept Plan.

The committee also discussed some of the next steps such as developing collateral for the Annual Meeting, producing a video of the Legacy Project process, drafting Preferred Concept Plan graphics and illustrations, and reaching out to potential ILASLA volunteers who'll want to help with the installation of the project in the spring of 2016.

Lynn Hollenberg sharing her story about the challenges her volunteer students faced while designing and installing the ACE Tech Courtyard Renewal for the 2009 Legacy Project.

Charrette #2 was held at Curie High School on July 17th bringing together Curie High School students with ACE Mentorship Program summer program students. ACE students were able to bring their design skills and knowledge to the table and work with Curie students to develop five great concept plans for the Curie courtyard.

The charrette kicked off with an insightful presentation from Lynn Hollenberg who was the chair of the 2009 Legacy Project. Students were given the chance to see how previous site challenges were overcome and encouraged to think more creatively when it comes to problem solving in their designs.

Each team was charged with refining the previously developed concept plans while also considering design challenges such as installation limitations, construction costs, long-term maintenance, and remaining flexible since donations are not confirmed until after the Expo.

Legacy Project volunteers met to review the concept plans developed by student design teams at Charrette #1. Each student design team had two ILASLA volunteers working with them to provide insight and to help them keep the process moving forward.

This meeting allowed ILASLA volunteers the chance to present the key ideas and designs their students developed to the entire Legacy Project Committee. From these presentations the committee pulled out major design themes to be considered at Charrette #2, developed key design criteria to guide students at Charrette #2, and outlined an initial wishlist for exhibitors attending the Annual Meeting and Expo.

Charrette #1 was a Success!

Team Wag's site analysis work, program, and concept plan

Today was the first opportunity ILASLA volunteers were able to work with Curie and ACE Tech students. The turnout was fantastic! After a brief introduction about the project from ILASLA volunteers, school administrators provided a history of the courtyard, and students gave a brief summary of how the site is currently underutilized.

The charrette facilitator Andrew Weiss guided the students through the process of assessing the site, identifying a program, and sketching out concepts for a pinup. Each group presented their concepts and ideas, allowing each student the chance to express what's most important to them.

Thanks to Curie Metro High School for allowing us to use their facility for the charrette. Thanks to Andrew Weiss for keeping the students engaged and informed about the design process. Thanks to all the ILASLA volunteers that dedicated their time and expertise to work with the students. It was a very creative and productive day!

Meeting with ACE Tech

Today we met with ACE Tech representatives to talk about a potential partnership for the 2015 Legacy Project. It's exciting to see what our two volunteer organizations can accomplish this time.

In 2009 ILASLA volunteers and ACE Tech students designed and installed a courtyard as the ACE Tech Charter High School. Looking forward to another great opportunity to design and build something great!
